Reading the word ‚masque‘ one immediately thinks about a mask or face covering, and the French word for it. But instead the word ‚masque‘ in English relates to a specific historical form of entertainment in which disguised participants join together in a ceremonial dance, especially popular in England during the 16th and 17th centuries. The theme of the drama presented during a masque was usually mythological, allegorical, or symbolic.
Tennessee Williams gives his play ‚Camino Real‘ a supplementary description as stage directions for ‚being a masque along sixteen blocks of a royal road‘ —while adding: „nothing more nor less than my conception of the time and the world I live in.“
